Six Sussex County Homes Repaired
In May, 2011, the Sussex Episcopal Workcamp completed another successful week of providing minor, but crucial home repairs at six residential properties throughout Sussex County; from Seaford to Lincoln to Lewes to Long Neck to Frankford.
This being the 3rd year of a week-long effort to make home repairs for family homes in need of repair, twenty-seven Episcopalians gathered at Camp Arrowhead each day during the week of May 23–27. Men and women from Saint Martha's, Bethany Beach; All Saints, Rehoboth Beach; Saint George's Chapel, Harbeson; Christ Church, Milford; and The Church of the Ascension, Claymont gathered each morning for a fabulous breakfast prepared by Camp Arrowhead Chef, Jim Feaster.
Following breakfast folks were assigned to work teams and sent on their way to the various work sites. Each team was headed by an experienced job coach. The work sites were determined by The First State Resource, Conservation and Development Council of Delaware and the Sussex County Habitat for Humanity's "Brush of Kindness" division. Both RC&D and Habitat provided the necessary materials needed to complete the work to be done. Funding for the materials was provided by state and local contributions.
The repairs completed this year were installation of new skirting around a mobile home, building handicap ramps, replacement of windows and doors, repairing floors, and installing new tub walls and water closets.
Lunches were prepared at Camp Arrowhead and delivered to the job sites each day. Following the work-day, volunteers had the option to return to Camp Arrowhead for dinner and fellowship before heading home. Excellent resident facilities were available for participants living outside the near proximity of Camp Arrowhead.
Some skills in carpentry are helpful, however not required. There are many, many chores at the job sites that require only a desire to support and be a helper. RC&D and Habitat are providing home repairs year-round, and are constantly recruiting people to volunteer at sites in your own community.
