Blessing of the Bikes & Pancake Breakfast, Saturday, May 17, 9:00 - 11:00 a.m., at Church of the Ascension, Claymont. After breakfast, we will have a brief service in memory of friends, fellow bikers, and military personnel in recognition of Armed Forces Day, followed by the blessing of the bikes. All bikes are welcome! Breakfast is $8.00 for adults; one child (10 and under) is free with each paid adult.

Cathedral Choir School Book Sale, Saturday, May 17, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Cathedral Church of Saint John.
If you enjoy finding a good book at a great price and don’t mind reading one that is gently used, you’ll find second hand books for sale – from used copies of bestsellers to rare items – as well as delicious baked goods. All of the proceeds from this event will benefit the Cathedral Choir School of Delaware’s upcoming New York City Choir Tour in June.

Combined Service at Prince George’s Chapel, Dagsboro, Sunday, May 18, 10:00 a.m. St. Martin's-in-the-Field, Selbyville and St. Mark's, Millsboro, will be worshipping together at historic Prince George's Chapel in Dagsboro. The Rev. David Archibald, who serves both congregations will conduct the service and be the Celebrant at the Eucharist. Built in 1755, Prince George's Chapel had its beginning as an Anglican chapel-of-ease, serving the northern outlying area of Worcester Parish, Maryland. Following the American Revolution, it became an independent parish church in the Diocese of Delaware. The State of Delaware was deeded the property in 1967 and it has been restored and reopened as a museum. For further details, please contact Ed Burton at 732-9370.
Overnight Spiritual Retreat, May 19-20. The Spiritual Companions of the Diocese of Delaware invite you to join them at the Franciscan Spiritual Center in Aston, PA. The Rev. Carlyle Gill, Priest Associate at St. Peter’s, Lewes, the retreat leader, is an experienced spiritual director, with a specialty in centering prayer. Richard Rohr in Everything Belongs wrote, “Prayer is not primarily saying words or thinking thoughts. It is a stance. It’s a way of living in the Presence, living in awareness of the Presence, and even enjoying the Presence. The full contemplative is not just aware of the Presence, but trusts, allows, and delights in it.” The cost is $55 per person. Christian Ed Workshop Offered at Three Locations: Tuesday, May 20, 6:30-9:00 p.m. at Wesley U.M. Church in Dover; Thursday, May 29, 6:30-9:00 p.m. at First U.M. Church, Chestertown; and Saturday, June 7, 9:30 a.m. - noon at St. Albans Church, Wilmington. Paula Hartzell of the Interfaith Resource Center and Madeline Beall of Cokesbury will review Christian education curriculum styles and what to look for in the decision-making process. We will review prevailing trends and denominational preferences regarding Christian formation. You will hear about changes in the offerings of current popular programs and get a sneak peak at the new curricula including Rock Solid, the new program from Abingdon / Cokesbury. Each participant will receive a comparison chart listing over 50 curricula from over a dozen publishers, their source information, educational approach and pricing. There will be time for browsing samples of many of the curricula. The cost of the event is $5 per person or $10 for 3 persons from the same church. Delaware Interfaith Coalition of Aging, Wednesday, May 21. The theme of this annual spring conference is “Giving Meaning to Life, Leaving a Legacy.” Older Delawareans will share the legacies they created in politics, education, volunteering, and the arts. Advanced registration is recommended as seating is limited. Registration fee is $20 before May 7, $25 after May 7. 125th Anniversary, Cathedral Choir School of Delaware, May 31 - June 1. Click here for details of this two-day celebration of 125 years of music appreciation at the Cathedral Choir School. A history tour of the Cathedral and Brandywine Village will be given at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 31. There will be a Festal Evensong at 4:45 p.m., also on Saturday, May 31. Then, at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 1, there will be a Choral Eucharist Service. All events take place at the Cathedral Church of Saint John and are free and open to the public.
Clergy Get Together With Bishop Tennis, Thursday, June 5, 2:30 p.m. Cabell Tennis was our diocesan bishop from 1986 to 1997. His visit to Wilmington provides a good opportunity for the clergy of the diocese, especially those who served during his episcopate, to get together. To that end, you are all invited to an informal gathering in the Common Room of the Cathedral Church of Saint John. Diocese of Delaware in the Holy Land – January 21 to February 5, 2009. Clergy and laity alike are invited to participate in the Diocese of Delaware’s pilgrimage to the Holy Land in January, 2009. The pilgrimage will be based at Saint George’s College in Jerusalem. The fee for the course will be $2,260. The fee covers room and board, all course transportation, and the program itself. Riki Burton joins Bishop’s Staff as Financial Consultant during Business Manager’s Sabbatical. Ms. Riki Burton of Lewes, DE has agreed to serve as part-time Financial Consultant during Judith Gregory’s four-month sabbatical. From May 1 to August 31, Riki will spend two days per week (Mondays and Wednesdays) assisting the Finance Department of the Bishop’s Office by assuming some of the Business Manager’s responsibilities and functions. She will also review current policies and procedures within the finance office tasks, and make observations and recommendations regarding policies, procedures and distribution of work. Riki’s earlier work experience includes assisting the CFO of Beebe Hospital and Account Services Coordinator for United Healthcare. She has experience as a Benefits Enrollment Manager. With her vast expertise, we are delighted that Riki Burton will join the Bishop’s Staff during Judi Gregory’s sabbatical. Please be sure to welcome her. Transition Updates: Trinity Church has called their new rector, The Rev. Patricia Downing (see below). Immanuel Church, Highlands is interviewing candidates. St. Thomas’s is beginning to interview in May. Other parishes in transition are St. Anne’s, Middletown; the Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew; and St. Albans.
New Rector called to Trinity Parish, Wilmington. The Rev. Patricia Steinecke Downing comes to us from Good Shepherd Parish in Silver Spring, Maryland, where she has served as Rector since 1997. She will begin her service in August.
