Good Friday Offering. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jeffers Schori asks Episcopalians to pray for their sisters and brothers in the Holy Land and to support the Good Friday Offering. A missionary is being sought to serve the Episcopal Church of the Sudan (ECS) in the Provincial Office in Juba, Southern Sudan. The objective is to provide support to The Most Rev. Daniel Deng Bul Yak, Archbishop of the ECS and his efforts to organize, maintain, and report accurate financial books, safeguard cash, provide cost -effective use of resources, train and mentor the Provincial Chief Accountant and Bookkeeper and provide methods of transparency to donors and among the provincial office and dioceses. The Division of Family Services, in partnership with the State Office of Volunteerism, is looking for Mentor Volunteers to serve children aging out of the Foster Care system. Volunteer Mentors would teach life skills, such as how to balance a check book, rent an Apartment, learn to interview, develop a budget, and much more! A few hours a month could make a huge difference in helping these young men and women build independent living skills for a brighter future. Training is offered to Volunteer Mentors prior to working with children. Saturday, February 20, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Traces of the Trade: Film and Day of Reflection. To register, and for details about this day of reflection, scroll to the bottom of St. Thomas's website. St. Thomas’ Parish in Newark will screen Katrina Brown’s personal documentary, which chronicles a unique and disturbing journey into the history and legacy of the U.S. slave trade. Worship, movie, lunch and optional small group discussions are free and open to all. Required reservations are due by Friday, Feb. 12.This event is co-sponsored by St. James Mill Creek and Episcopal Campus Ministry at the University of Delaware.
Saturday, February 20, 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Diaconate Information and Discernment Day. Is God calling you into diaconal ministry? Do you want to learn more about this vital ministry in the Church? The next discernment day for lay persons exploring a call to be a Deacon, and congregations wanting to be followers or “Diaconal” congregations, will be held at Christ Church, Dover. This morning session will discuss what it means to be a deacon in this diocese, what is the overall discernment process, and the witness of one of our newly ordained deacons. Each deacon inquirer must be accompanied by his or her rector and a representative of the vestry. Lunch will be served. If you plan to attend please have your rector register the number of attendees with Cynde Bimbi in the Bishop's Office by February 12.
Tuesdays, February 23 - March 30th, 6:00 p.m., Delaware Hospice will offer a 6-week Parent Educational Support Group (following the loss of a child) in Milford. Those who have experienced the loss of a child will find help. A Sibling Group will be offered simultaneously during the 1st, 3rd, and final sessions. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death for adults between the ages of 18 and 64 in the United States and the third leading cause of death among 15-24 years old.
