Health Equality in Delaware

“Of all the forms of inequality,
injustice in health is the most shocking
and the most inhumane.”

—Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King

Community Breakfast, Thursday, July 31, 2008, 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. at Christ our King Catholic Church, 28th and Madison Streets, Wilmington. The Community Healthcare Access Program, or CHAP, helps uninsured Delawareans to get the care that they need. The Delaware Ecumenical Council on Children and Families is among several agencies and organizations helping them to promote CHAP among faith communities. Click here for more information about the CHAP program or call 225-1040.

The Delaware Ecumenical Council has an initiative, People in Focus, that calls attention to an important resource for many individuals without health insurance. The Community Healthcare Access Program, or CHAP, is operated by the Delaware Health Care Commission in collaboration with the Medical Society of Delaware. CHAP helps provide access to primary care doctors, medical specialists, and other health resources including prescription programs, laboratory and radiology services.

People in Focus calls on churches to put CHAP literature in their houses of worship and to mention the program to their congregations. First, urge anyone in the congregation who does not have health insurance to enroll in CHAP. Then, ask anyone who might know of a friend, colleague or neighbor who needs health insurance to take a brochure to that person and get him/her enrolled.

Uninsured people are not necessarily the poor or unemployed; many uninsured people work for themselves or for small businesses that cannot afford medical benefits.

I am writing this not only as a program administrator but also as a local church minister. Based on my experiences at three very typical United Methodist churches where I have been active as a supply minister, I doubt that there is a congregation in Delaware that does not have or know someone who could use this information.

Click here to send my office an e-mail with your mailing address and we will send or bring you a supply of brochures. Or call me at 302 225-1040 if you have questions, need more brochures, or want a speaker.

Grace and peace,

Rev. Robert P. Hall, Executive Director
